Meet our inaugural committee

president

SU LEGATO

Su has practised Tai Chi since the early 1980s and has taught for over 25 years. She is one of Australia’s most accomplished Tai Chi practitioners, holding multiple national and state champion titles and winning gold medals at numerous international events. She represented Australia at two World Championships, placing 22nd in Macau (2003) and 15th/17th in Vietnam (2005).

A former President of Wushu Tai Chi Qi Gong Australia (WTQA), Su also holds Duan Wei grading with the Chinese Wushu Association. In 2011, she travelled to China to deepen her study of Wudang Tai Chi, training under 14th and 15th generation inheritors of the Wudang San Feng Pai lineage. Su has returned many times since to improve her knowledge and practice, training at Wudang martial arts schools and Five Immortals Daoist Temple.

VICE PRESIDENT

SUELLEN COOK

Suellen began Tai Chi two years ago, continuing a lifelong dedication to movement and discipline. She previously played competitive cricket and earned her black belt in Shukokai Karate. Over the years she also practised yoga, kung fu and bushwalking, but always drawn to the focus and resilience of martial arts.

At Legato Tai Chi she found a practice that unites martial application with mindful awareness — a true integration of mind and body. She travelled to China to compete in the 8th Wudang Tai Chi International Fellowship Competition, achieving gold and silver placings in individual events and silver in the team event.

Now retired from her career in disability support and psychology, Suellen devotes her time to Tai Chi, family, and the outdoors.

SECRETARY

ANGELA IAQUINTO

Angela began Tai Chi in 2021 as part of her rehabilitation following a serious ladder accident. Experiencing the subtle yet significant health benefits, she chose to continue. She especially values the camaraderie of her fellow students — “We laugh a lot.”

In 2025, she travelled to Wudang for her first international competition, feeling fortunate to be part of a strong and supportive team. She hopes others will have similar opportunities to learn and compete.

Angela’s professional life was in education, beginning in primary schools and later specialising in Vocational Education within Melbourne’s dual-sector universities. Today, she keeps active with a range of fitness pursuits, assists with wildlife rescue and transport, and, according to her family, happily maintains far too many hobbies and interests.

OUR FIRST WWAM PROJECT

JOURNEY TO WUDANG

We’re keen to share our experiences in Wudang Mountain. It’s such an amazing place to be, but especially so if you’re a Tai Chi or martial arts practitioner. There are ancient temples to practice in, great schools for training, weapon and uniform shops, local festivals to celebrate, wonderful people to meet and the Wudang International Tai Chi Competition.

It’s always good to know the cultural dos and don’ts in these places before you put your foot in it... So if you’re planning a trip to China – in a plane or from your armchair - come along to our monthly get-together and pick up some hot tips and good practices. We’ll be discussing everything from temples to taxis, swords to street food and all the tales in between. We’ll also be teaching a Wudang Animal Qigong form and the Wudang 9, a foundational Tai Chi form written by Yang Qunli and widely practiced in the Wudang Mountains.

Click the button below for details of the program. To register, pop your payment directly into our bank account. Bookings are essential.

For more information, email wwam_association@proton.me or call Su for a chat on 0437 949 919

If you want to know more about competing, we will help you with that, too. We’ll be taking a team to the next competition and there’s room for you if you’d like to come! (as a competitor or a spectator) We would love to show you what competition is about in Wudang. It’s more fun than you may realise!

Full details for 2026 International Wudang Tai Chi Fellowship Conference and Competition will be available soon. Please ‘express your interest’ and we’ll keep you posted with the details of the trip and entry to the competition.
